Fun facts about the bat

The ones Sammy likes best. She tells them in the game, too.

  1. A bat's toes lock shut by themselves, so it can hang upside down without any effort, even when fast asleep.

  2. A bat's wing is really a hand, with super long fingers and skin stretched between them.

  3. Many bats catch bugs in the dark by shouting and listening for the echoes that bounce back.

  4. Honduran white bats are fluffy with yellow noses, and they chew leaves into little tents to sleep under.

  5. Bats' legs are too weak to run and take off, so they hang upside down and simply drop into the air.

  6. Bats are the only mammals that really fly by flapping their wings, while flying squirrels can only glide.

  7. One little brown bat can gobble up hundreds of tiny bugs in just one hour.

  8. The bumblebee bat weighs only about 2 grams, which makes it one of the smallest mammals on Earth.

Riddle

Can a friend guess it?

Read the clues to someone, one at a time, without saying the animal. How many clues do they need? Fewer is better, just like in the game.

  1. I sleep through the day with lots of my family in a dark, quiet place.

  2. Many of us are so small and light that we would fit in your hand.

  3. My wings are really hands, with very long fingers and thin skin stretched between them.

  4. I find bugs in the dark by shouting and listening for the echoes that bounce back.

  5. I have fur, not feathers, yet I really fly, and I sleep hanging upside down.

Professor Sammy, a cartoon explorer in a safari hat and round glasses

Sammy might be thinking of a bat.

In Thought Zoo, Sammy picks an animal and you ask her yes-or-no questions to find it. You'll find the bat in the Woods adventure.
